The transport system in India is large and extensive. Millions of people of India use the large network of railways and roadways in India.

Buses, cycle-rickshaws, autorickshaws, e-rickshaws, tempos (big, brutal-looking autorickshaws), taxis, boats, tongas (horse-drawn carts), metros and urban trains provide transport around India’s cities.

Costs for public transport vary from town to town. Regular taxis and autorickshaws may or may not go by the meter, depending on the location. Be prepared to pay more if you get a taxi from your hotel. Cab drivers will wait outside hotels in tourist areas and charge higher rates.

To avoid the hassle, tourists who can afford it often choose to use app-based cab services such as Ola and Uber, which now operate in many areas in India. These cabs can be hired for longer day or overnight trips.
